Dose-Response And Efficacy Of 904 nm Photobiomodulation On Diabetic Foot Ulcers Healing: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
Research Summary
This blinded, placebo-controlled trial compared three doses of 904 nm light alongside conventional wound care. Participants received up to 20 sessions; all groups also received sunflower-oil dressings.
Who Or What Was Studied?
Eighty people with non-infected diabetic foot ulcers participated. Their mean age was 58.5 years; 48.75% were women.
What Did The Research Show?
- The authors reported ulcer-size reductions across the tested doses of 4, 8 and 10 J/cm².
- The 10 J/cm² group had a complete healing rate of 60% and the largest proportion reaching a 50% reduction in ulcer size after five weeks.
- At the 10-week follow-up, only the 10 J/cm² group showed a statistically significant difference from placebo (p < 0.05).
Limitations And Interpretation
- The findings concern non-infected diabetic ulcers and this particular protocol. They cannot be assumed to apply to all wounds or consumer panels.
- Light was used alongside wound care; this trial does not establish it as a replacement. These reported outcomes do not establish long-term recurrence rates.
